Tree dedication will honor DUI victims

The 10th annual Victim Memorial Tree dedication, "A Decade of Memories," will begin 11 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Park.

DUI victims, law enforcement, public officials and others will gather to dedicate additional trees to the STOP DUI Memorial Tree Grove.

The Las Vegas High School Madrigals will perform and candles will be lit during the roll call of victims' names.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Bobby Kintzel, a surviving victim of a DUI driver, will place the STOP DUI memorial wreath in honor of all DUI victims.

Motorcycle run will benefit Child Haven

Teamsters Local 631's motorcycle club is sponsoring a benefit motorcycle run on Saturday for Child Haven, Clark County's temporary shelter for abused and neglected youths.

Registration for the motorcycle run begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Leather Headquarters, 4542 Boulder Highway. The fee is $15 and all proceeds will go to Child Haven.

The benefit will feature a 60-mile motorcycle run through Clark County and beyond as well as a barbecue. Already, the club has acquired about $1,000 in cash and $2,000 in toy.

Las Vegas has recognized Walt Walters

as the December 2004 Citizen of the Month. Councilwoman Janet Moncrief chose Walters because of his commitment to the Gateway District Association, which leads community service projects in the area, including neighborhood cleanup and the distribution of food to needy families.

Valley firefighters will be collecting toys

for needy children 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Dec. 18 and 19 at these Wal-Mart locations: 540 Marks St., 547-0551; 1807 W. Craig Road, 633-6521; 2310 E. Serene Ave., 270-7831; 8060 W. Tropical Parkway, 839-3620.

Clark County planners will hold a special open house

5 p.m.-7 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria of the County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway, to give the public an extra opportunity to learn about the county's proposed mixed-use development ordinance.

Traffic disruptions can be expected

next week at the intersection of Lone Mountain Road and El Capitan Way as crews continue work associated with the Gowan North Channel flood control improvement project. Work will continue through the next four to six weeks.
