International Game Technology Chief Executive Thomas J. Matthews will succeed G. Thomas Baker as chairman of the slot maker, effective March 1, the company said today.
"TJ" Matthews, former chief executive of slot maker Anchor Gaming, became chief operating officer of IGT in December 2001 when the company acquired Anchor. He assumed the role of chief executive in October 2003. Matthews will remain CEO.
In a statement, Baker said he has focused on succession planning at IGT with the goal of "promotion from within."
"I feel this appointment is in line with that philosophy and one that will contribute to the ongoing success of the company," he said.
Baker, who has been with IGT for 16 years, announced his retirement as chairman last month. Baker became chairman just over a year ago with the retirement of Charles Mathewson.
