Off-road overall title goes to Oregon racer

Gary Weyhrich captured the Class 1500 and overall titles for car and trucks in Saturday's Best in the Desert Racing Association Henderson's Terrible 300 desert race.

Weyhrich, of Troutdale, Ore., covered the 325 miles (five laps on a 65-mile circuit) in 5 hours, 27 minutes, 43 seconds and finished more than 14 minutes ahead of Class 1500 competitor Bob Lofton of Westmorland, Calif. Class 1400 winner Gary Dircks of Phoenix was third overall in 5:48:41.

Las Vegas native Rob MacCachren and co-driver Danny Anderson won Class 2000 and were 12th overall in 6:47:59. MacCachren also finished second with co-driver Steve Olliges in Class 7300 for stock mini trucks.

Johnny Campbell and Steve Hengeveld, who teamed to win their class in last month's Baja 1000, won the Open Pro motorcycle class in 6:41:53. Michael Ahlmeyer of Sparks and Mike Ponte of Henderson teamed to win the Sporstman Class 1800 race, Randy Sorensen of Las Vegas won Class 7200 for unlimited mini or mid-sized trucks and Las Vegas' Rob McBeath captured Class 1100.

In the motorcycle classes, Bryan Folks of Las Vegas won the 250 Pro class; Jesse Canepa of Searchlight won the Open Expert class; Jerry Parsons of Boulder City captured the 4-Stroke Expert class; Ross Williams of Las Vegas won Over 40 Pro; and Glenn Warren of Las Vegas claimed the Ironman Expert title. The Henderson's Terrible 300, which was held for the first time in December after being contested in July the past two years, drew 169 entries.
