Bicycles will go to schoolchildren
More than 50 volunteers, ranging from police officers and firefighters to teachers and Boy Scouts, will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at Robert Taylor Elementary School, 144 Westminster Way in Henderson, to assemble more than 200 bicycles for students.
Members of the public are also invited to grab a wrench and help build bikes.
Also, a fundraiser to benefit the literacy program at the school will be 7 p.m.-9 p.m. p.m. Sunday at the SteinMart clothing store, 9850 S. Maryland Parkway.
The event, which will feature prize giveaways and fashion shows, aims to raise money for new books for Taylor's library.
Tickets to the fundraiser are $5, with all proceeds going to the school, and are available at the door, or may be purchased in advance by calling Jean Herzog at 617-4652.

Doctoral program planned for nurses
Nurses interested in earning a Ph.D. can learn about UNLV's new doctoral program Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in room 131 of the Rod Lee Bigelow Health Sciences Building.
The doctoral program will train students to be nursing educators and researchers, UNLV officials said, and the courses are designed to work around work and family obligations. Students will take most of their class online with the exception of a one-semester residency requirement.
Faculty from UNLV'S School of Nursing will answer questions on Saturday about the program, the coursework and admissions.
The information session is free but prospective students are asked to RSVP to 895-4254. A continental breakfast will be provided.

Pesticides can be turned in
Southern Nevada nurseries and pest control operators are invited to turn in to the state Agriculture Department unwanted, banned and unusable pesticides free of charge through Jan. 28 at its Las Vegas office.
The Agriculture Department will accept insecticides, weed killers, rat and mouse bait, fungicides and all other pesticides between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays at its building at 2300 McCleod St.
Anyone interested in bringing waste pesticides to the department must have made an appointment by calling 486-4690.
Agriculture officials cannot accept paint, antifreeze, oil, fertilizer and other nonpesticides.
Post offices extending hours
Beginning Saturday, the U.S. Postal Service will extend the business hours Monday through Friday to 7 a.m.-7 p.m. through Dec. 21.
Saturday hours will be added or extended from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Dec. 11 and continuing through Dec. 18.
The Post Office Express hours are 10:30 a.m.-7 Monday through Friday and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday located inside Albertson's Stores.

Domenici to speak on nuclear energy
Sen. Pete V. Domenici, R-N.M., will speak in Las Vegas Dec. 13 and sign copies of his book, "A Brighter Tomorrow: Fulfilling the Promise of Nuclear Energy."
Domenici's appearance is part of the Atomic Testing Museum's ongoing world affairs lecture series. The senator will present a case for nuclear power as a major contributor toward reducing dependence on oil and natural gas.
There is no charge for the program, but seating is limited.
The event begins a 5 p.m. at the museum, 755 E. Flamingo Road at Swenson Street.

Enrollment is open for the Desert Dudes
and Desert Babies programs at Red Rock Canyon. The programs feature games, crafts, and environmental lessons. The next Desert Dudes session, ages 5-8, will be Dec. 11. The next for Desert Babies, ages 3 and 4, will be Dec. 21. Enrollment is limited and sessions are free other than the usual park entrance fees. The Junior League of Las Vegas
will begin its annual Jingle Bell Jog race/walk event with registration 6 a.m. Saturday at the Trails Park in Summerlin after an aerobic warm-upexercise given by 24-Hour Fitness. Carolers are scheduled to sing at various points throughout the race route, and all runners will wear the traditional jingle-bells tied to their shoes. The event is open to all ages. Call 822-6536.
