Airline to seek court ruling blocking possible union strikes

Friday, Dec. 3, 2004 | 9:35 a.m.

US Airways Group Inc. will seek a U.S. court order to prohibit a strike by any employees should the airline win approval to cancel some union contracts and impose pay and benefit cuts.

The airline will ask U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Stephen Mitchell as soon as this weekend to hear arguments on the request on Dec. 16, spokesman David Castelveter said today. US Airways, which has said a strike would be illegal, is seeking the order because threats of a union walkout are hurting business.

The Association of Flight Attendants is voting whether to authorize a strike if Mitchell lets US Airways cancel three contracts that also cover mechanics and baggage handlers.

The airline, in hearings that began yesterday, is seeking the authority because it has been unable to reach agreements on wage concessions needed to emerge from bankruptcy.
