Questions surround Scherer’s future on Gaming Control Board

CARSON CITY -- Was Wednesday Scott Scherer's last meeting as a member of the state Gaming Control Board?

Maybe. But maybe not.

Scherer, who was appointed to the board in 2000 by Gov. Kenny Guinn, will see his term expire at the end of December.

Would he like to be reappointed?

"Yes," Scherer said during a break in Wednesday's meeting, "but there are a whole lot of moving parts" involved in the decision.

Scherer has been mentioned as one of the possible replacements for Attorney General Brian Sandoval, who is resigning to take a federal judicial appointment.

Scherer said he has no comment on whether he would welcome an appointment to the attorney general's post.

Greg Bortolin, a spokesman for Gov. Kenny Guinn, said the governor isn't prepared to make an announcement about Scherer's potential reappointment to the Gaming Control Board until the first of the year.

As for whether Scherer is being considered for attorney general, Bortolin said Scherer is an "obvious candidate" because of his credentials.

Scherer said he would be open to serving on the Gaming Control Board until a replacement is found. That would enable Guinn's staff extra time to seek a new board member if Scherer is headed to the attorney general's office.

Sandoval will continue to serve as attorney general until he formally takes a U.S. District Court post, succeeding Howard McKibben of Reno, who is taking senior status in April.
