Cheyenne at 2-0 after win at Foothill
Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004 | 9:10 a.m.
The Cheyenne boys' basketball team made it two in a row to start the season with 74-66 win Tuesday night at Foothill.
Quinton Carter led the Desert Shields with 16 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore center Melvyn Oliver added 11 points, four rebounds and two blocks. Foothill was led by senior point guard Patrick Jones, who had 19 points going 3-for-5 from the 3-point line.
The Falcons jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with two quick baskets by junior forward Kevin Kreier. Cheyenne battled back to tie the game at 13 with 2:09 left in the first. The Desert Shields ended the quarter on a 7-4 run, closing with a 21-17 lead.
Foothill pulled within 2 points at 27-25 on a 3-pointer by Jones early in the second quarter. Just 27 seconds later, Jones gave the Falcons the lead on another 3-pointer.
Foothill tied the game at 34 seven seconds into the third quarter, but foul trouble began to hurt the Falcons. Kreier picked up his third and fourth fouls just 13 seconds apart, sending him to the bench with 5:37 left in the third. Cheyenne was able to take advantage of his absence and built a 50-45 lead by the end of the third quarter.
Cheyenne's Oliver scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter to give the Desert Shields a 12-point lead, 66-54, with just over three minutes remaining in the game.
Foothill pulled to within seven with Kreier's 3-pointer with 1:22 to play, but Cheyenne was able to hold off the Falcons for the win.
Both coaches felt their teams look tired at the end of the early-season game.
"We have a lot of work to do," Cheyenne coach Larry Johnson said. "We still need to get some players in shape. The zone really slowed us down a bit. There are seven football players on this team that need to get in shape for the season."
Foothill coach Kevin Soares said his team has some conditioning work to do as well.
"We looked good for about two and a half quarters," said Soares. "We were real tired toward the end of the game."
