RTC to look at 33-mile light rail project

The Regional Transportation Commission will get a look in October at a proposed light rail project for Southern Nevada, after its Executive Advisory Committee reviewed the plans Thursday.
Jacob Snow, RTC general manager, said if the full commission likes the concept, it could form a steering committee to study the proposed 33-mile route that, if approved, would eventually link Henderson to North Las Vegas. Once funding is secured, likely through both federal funds and local tax money from Question 10, the project could begin to take shape by 2008, planners for the light rail have said.
The project's cost could be a sticking point, as previous estimates have tagged the light rail at between $20 million and $70 million a mile. That could put the final cost between $700 million and more than $2 billion, depending on the model of train the RTC decides to use, Charles DeWeese, project manager for Parsons, the firm contracted to design the light rail, told the committee.
DeWeese said the builders will likely try to get funds from the Federal Transportation Administration, a process he said could take years.
A steering committee would help RTC planners gauge public feedback on the costly systems.
