Man arrested on murder charge in alleged child abuse case

Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 | 9:35 a.m.

North Las Vegas Police arrested a 21-year-old man Saturday in connection with the death of his girlfriend's 15-month old son.

Wayne Jackson was jailed this morning in the North Las Vegas Detention Center on a charge of murder by child abuse. He is accused of killing Quin'Tavion Wells on Friday.

Officer Tim Bedwell, North Las Vegas Police spokesman, said officers were called to the house the couple shared in the 3100 block Plumwood Lane near Cheyenne Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard shortly before 8 p.m. Friday.

The child had signs of trauma to his body and he was cold, Bedwell said.

After a medical examiner determined the child's death was a homicide, officers conducted additional interviews and arrested Jackson. He lived with the child's mother, Bedwell said.

Jackson had a prior conviction for attempted burglary and attempted possession of a stolen vehicle. At the time of his arrest he had an outstanding felony warrant for a probation violation, police said.

Bedwell said no other children lived in the home. Susan Klein-Rothschild, director of Clark County Department of Family Services, said her agency had no prior contact with the mother.

This is the second case of alleged murder by child abuse in North Las Vegas this year. In March, police arrested Maria Hermosillo-Dellamas in connection with the death of her 8-month-old son.
