Letter: Early registration renewal punished

I do not see why Nevada punishes me for renewing my vehicle registration early. Whenever I register early, trying to make sure that everything clears by the legally designated date, I am penalized by the moving of my "due date" to the date I renewed.

I first registered my car Aug. 28, 1993. Through the years, the renewal date has moved up to Aug. 8. If I wait to the last day to renew, I have to use the DMV office and that has taken up to eight hours to get the job done.

This year I renewed online, on Aug. 4. Five days later my new registration arrived in the mail. We now have a new renewal date of Aug. 4. This means the state has punished me four days of registration for registering early.

Is this a way for the state to make more money? Every day the state "shaves" off the registration is actually being paid for twice, once on the old registration fee and once on the new registration fee. If this is happening to all the people who do early vehicle registration, then that is a lot of money over the years.
