Valley Hospital closing psych unit

Valley Hospital Medical Center officials this weekend announced plans to close a 12-bed geropsychiatric unit, a move that will displace an elderly population suffering mental illness, a spokeswoman for the hospital said this morning.
The unit will close Sept. 1 to make room for the hospital's expanding OB-GYN clinic, Lori Harris, a spokeswoman for the hospital, said.
The patients displaced by the move will be discharged before the closing date, but Harris could not say if they would be readmitted to another hospital.
Valley executives made the decision June 1, she said.
