Visitor count climbs in June

Just over 3 million people visited Las Vegas in June, a 2.2 percent increase from the same month last year, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reported today.
While not a record month, the total represents "one of our busiest Junes ever," Senior Research Analyst John Piet said. The numbers fell from March, April and May, a reflection of somewhat slower summer months, he said.
Convention attendance fell 32 percent to 305,431 people in June compared with last year and non-gaming economic spending generated by June conventions fell 31 percent compared with a year ago.
The decline is mostly because of scheduling differences involving shows that were held in June last year but repeated in May or July of this year, Piet said.
Other indicators showed continued economic strength, he said. The average hotel occupancy rate rose 1.7 points to 87.5 percent and average daily rates rose 9 percent to $80.01.
Total passenger traffic through McCarran International Airport rose 14.6 percent to 3,533,118 people and average daily auto traffic on I-15 at the California border was virtually flat at 40,921 vehicles.
