Acting City Manager Mayes expected to get job permanently

Friday, Aug. 13, 2004 | 9:36 a.m.

Boulder City's acting city manager since February is expected to be appointed to the job permanently on Aug. 24.

City Clerk Vicki Mayes was put in the temporary position after former City Manager John Sullard was pushed from the job by the City Council.

The council initiated a broad search for a new city manager, and was expected to move forward with plans to interview finalists for the position. However, during the Tuesday council meeting, council members decided that instead of interviewing several candidates they would appoint Mayes to the position.

The formal vote on the appointment is expected Aug. 24.

Mayor Robert Ferraro said he was surprised the council decided not to go through with the interviews, but supports the decision.

"I was surprised, but pleasantly surprised," Ferraro said.

The mayor said he has become more convinced during the past few months that Mayes is the right person for the job. Ferraro said he has been particularly impressed with Mayes' thorough understanding of all issues that come before the council.

Mayes could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The mayor is also recommending the council appoint Pamella Malmstrom city clerk. Malmstrom, who has been with the city for three years, has been performing many of the city clerk's duties since Mayes became acting city manager.

If appointed city manager, Mayes salary is expected to be $129,314 a year. She would also receive a $450-a-month car allowance.

Malmstron would be paid $97,252 a year and receive a monthly car allowance of $350, if she is made city clerk.
