Columnist Muriel Stevens: Mall is where to be scene

Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004 | 8:15 a.m.

Teenagers who missed "The Scene" at the Boulevard mall last Saturday can make "The Scene" at the Meadows mall this Saturday. These special events give teens a look at what's hot in fashion, style, technology and music for the upcoming school semesters. National sponsors Pepsi and Fujifilm participated in the fun and games.

At the Boulevard mall the activities included picture-taking and a fashion show featuring the latest styles from Charlotte Russe, Rampage, Foot Locker, Rave, Dillard's and more. Guests sampled Pepsi's new drink, Pepsi Edge, and were eligible to win a variety of prizes.

"We were happy to be able to host this event and offer our teenage shoppers a fun and interactive way to enjoy their shopping experience here," said Carrie Renfrew, senior marketing manager for the Boulevard mall. "This event arrived at the perfect time, summer break, and tapped into the teens' primary passions of shopping, fashion and music."

"The Scene" at Meadows Mall on Saturday will feature similar events, broadcasts and prize giveaways. Special offers and discounts will be featured at participating stores. The action begins at 4 p.m. in JC Penney's Court. For more information, call the Meadows mall, 878-4849.

Experience the thrill of Axe touch: Axe, an all-over body spray deodorant for men, has a new fragrance, Touch, and a marketing ploy that's a kick. The sleek black spray can advises, "The Axe effect may result in, but is not limited to, unrelenting female attention and/or late nights." It also smells good.

And when was the last time you got a good chuckle by reading a can of deodorant body spray?

Axe ($3.99-$4.99) is available in eight fragrances: Touch, Essence, Apollo, Kilo, Orion, Phoenix, Tsunami and Voodoo.

Crabtree & Evelyn for men: Men just want to have fun ... so, they're pampering themselves with skin treatments and spa days. The venerable Crabtree & Evelyn company has been offering shaving and grooming essentials for men for many years. Soothing natural ingredients such as almond oil, vitamin E and glycerine, protect and benefit the skin.

After-shave balms are alcohol-free, the Hair and Body Wash is a versatile formula for hair, scalp and body, and New Shave Cream is an advanced formula with vitamin E.

Prices for Crabtree & Evelyn's men's products range from $13.50 to $150 for a three-piece shave set. For store locations visit www.crabtree-evelyn.com.

New at Magellan's: There are a number of items I can't wait to order from Magellan's early fall catalog. Designed for travelers, Magellan's features many items not found in other travel catalogs. The Walking Bag by Swaney was created by a polio survivor, Etsuo Miyoshi, who needed an easy-to-maneuver bag that could also be "leaned on or sat on in a pinch."

This sturdy bag is lightweight, yet can support up to 300 pounds. It costs $145. The four swiveling wheels can be pulled in any direction.

The current catalog is available free. Call (800) 962-4943 or visit www.magellans.com.
