Monday’s temperature of 111 highest of year

Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 | 9:19 a.m.

Monday's high temperature of 111 degrees was the hottest temperature recorded so far this year, National Weather Service meteorologist Jim Harrison said.

The all-time record for Aug. 9 is 114 degrees set in 1940.

Today forecasters predicted the Las Vegas Valley would reach about 109 degrees, Harrison said, nowhere near the record 114 degrees set in 1978.

Still, the temperatures so far this week are four to seven degrees above the average highs of 104 degrees for these August days, Harrison said.

Lows are staying in the lower 80s, helping to boost the day's heating.

The daytime temperatures will continue to simmer under a dome of hot, still air hanging over Southern Nevada and Southern California until a possible return of the Southwest monsoon moisture on Thursday.

The Weather Service is predicting a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms Thursday and Friday.

Thursday's summer storms could stay in the surrounding mountains or at Lake Mead, however.

The best chance of a thunderstorm in the valley should be on Friday, Harrison said.

With the extra clouds and possible showers, the valley's temperature should drop into the normal range for this time of year, he said.
