Letter: New zoo would be inappropriate
Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 | 8:56 a.m.
The proposal to locate a second zoo for the Las Vegas area at Floyd Lamb State Park appears dead. But the proposal itself, to build a second zoo somewhere, perhaps on a much smaller parcel, remains alive. I have some concerns about this idea.
For one, we have a water shortage and a drought plan is in effect, limiting our use. Will animals also be under the drought plan?
Why not just improve the zoo we have? There doesn't seem to be a demand for a second zoo.
Also, any public money that is being set aside to subsidize a zoo should be put instead where it's needed most -- for emergency care for our citizens.
It would be in the best interest of the wild animals to leave them where they live naturally.
I'm sorry, but a new zoo is inappropriate for us here in the Mojave desert. So many zoos fail because of cost problems, and guess who pays?
