Former First Lady Carolyn O’Callaghan dies

CARSON CITY -- Carolyn O'Callaghan, widow of former Gov. Mike O'Callaghan, died Saturday at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, slightly more than five months after her husband died.
Carolyn O'Callaghan, 67, was hospitalized Aug. 2 after suffering a torn aorta. She was taken to Sunrise Hospital where she underwent eight hours of surgery.
"Carolyn was a wonderful First Lady, wife, mother and grandmother," Gov.Kenny Guinn said. "This is especially somber news coming so soon after we lost her husband, Mike.
"Dema and I extend our condolences to the O'Callaghan family,"
Former Gov. O'Callaghan, a Las Vegas Sun executive, died March 5.
Carolyn was a native of Twin Falls, Idaho. She met Mike O'Callaghan while they were attending the University of Idaho in Moscow. They were married Aug. 25, 1954.
The O'Callaghans moved to Henderson in 1956 where he got a job teaching at Basic High School. He served two terms as governor in the 1970s before joining the Sun.
She is survived by her five children, Michael, Brian, Colleen, Teresa and Tim, 15 grandchildren and a brother Brian Randall of Carson City.
