Volunteers wanted to write arguments on initiatives

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- Volunteers are being sought by the Secretary of State's Office to write arguments for and against the initiative petitions to repeal the $833.5 million tax increase and to prohibit government workers from serving in the Nevada Legislature.

The signature verification on these two petitions is still under way to determine if they have 51,337 valid signatures and 10 percent of the voters in 13 of the 17 counties. The results are due by 5 p.m. Monday.

Secretary of State Dean Heller said Thursday the petition process has been delayed due to a court challenge and he wants to have people ready to write the pros and cons on the two questions for the ballot.

A new law requires two committees of no more than three members each be appointed for each ballot question. There is no compensation for this work.

Interested citizens can call (775) 684 5705 or e-mail nvelect@ govmail.state.nv.us by 5 p.m. Aug. 11 to serve on one of the committees.
