Henry Cartier-Bresson, the leading photojournalist of his generation, died last week at age 95.
But the spirit of his work lives on at the Fashion Show mall.
While an East Coast art critic might snicker at the location, the work now on display at the retail emporium is serious, impressive and important.
The show of more than 300 images is called "Moments of Intimacy, Laughter and Kinship" -- M.I.L.K. for short. It is a collection of extraordinary and geographically diverse images portraying humanity in all forms.
The chief judge on the panel that selected the works was renowned Magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt. The Magnum agency was started by Cartier-Bresson in 1947.
Aside from rock photog Lynn Goldsmith and Pulitzer Prize winners William Foley and John Kaplan, most of the photographers featured in the show are not big names. But that hardly detracts from the impact of the images.
The official spokeswoman for the touring show is Kim Phuc. In a legendary shot, she was photographed as a child in 1972 by Nick Ut while running from her napalmed village in Vietnam.
The show, which is up through Sept. 6, is modeled on "The Family of Man," the landmark 1955 photo exhibition organized by Edward Steichen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, organizer Geoff Blackwell said.
Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was at Comet Cleaners on West Tropicana Road on Thursday afternoon dropping off some suits.
Today is the last day at KTNV Channel 13 for weatherman Bob Jeswald.
The popular forecaster is leaving after five years at the station to take a spot at KPHO Channel 5, the CBS affiliate in Phoenix.
Jeswald said he'll say a brief farewell on the air on tonight's 6 and 11 newscasts.
"I love Las Vegas and will miss many, many people," Jeswald told us Friday.
The A&E movie "Inked" premieres tonight at 9 (Cox cable channel 32). The hourlong documentary was filmed at the Hart and Huntington Tattoo Co. at the Palms.
"A bizarre combination of grit and glitz, 'Inked' sets the quirky characters of the tattoo culture against the excitement and glamour of the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas," reads a promotional announcement for the film.
Look for N'Sync-ers Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, radio DJ Danny Bonaduce of "Patridge Family" fame, former NBA stars Dennis Rodman and John Salley, actress Melissa Joan Hart, Robin Leach and hotel owner George Maloof to get inked, on camera, by proprietors John Huntington and Carey Hart.
ARTnews, the leading journal of its kind, is out with its annual ranking of "The World's Top 200 Collectors."
Its Top Ten, presented alphabetically, includes Steve Wynn.
The rest of the top group lists four members of the Lauder cosmetics clan, Wall Street figure Henry Kravis and Qatar's Sheikh Saud Al-Thanhi.
Also, Steve and Elaine Wynn and two other couples had dinner at Aureole (Mandalay Bay) Wednesday night. But our spies didn't hear if they were talking about art.
Gov. Kenny Guinn proclaimed Friday Chet Buchanan Day.
Buchanan is the KLUC 98.5-FM radio personality who returned to the station last week after a brief sojourn to Portland, Ore.
Buchanan started the station's annual holiday toy drive, which brought in thousands of toys last year for underprivileged kids.
Local performer Oscar Goodman, who had a small but significant role as a mob lawyer in the Marty Scorsese film "Casino," has been asked to participate in a special documentary about Las Vegas crime that will accompany the 10th anniversary DVD release of the film in early 2005.
The 30-minute film, which will precede the feature that stars Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone, will explore the role of organized crime in the shaping of Las Vegas.
Before his current career, Goodman the barrister represented reputed mob figures such as Tony "The Ant" Spilotro.
Also, Goodman is taping a bit on Monday at the Golden Nugget for Wanda Sykes' Comedy Central show.
Then, on Thursday, Goodman, in his day job as mayor of Las Vegas, presents the keys to the city to a California Dancin' Raisin in a ceremony at City Hall.
