Bryant's accuser considers options
The woman who accused Kobe Bryant of rape will have to discuss with prosecutors whether she will go ahead with the criminal case because she fears the release of court documents about her sex life threatens her chance of getting a fair hearing, one of her lawyers said today.
John Clune said his 20-year-old client will have to talk to prosecutors soon about that and will also consider whether to file a civil suit against the NBA star.
Asked if his client is considering dropping out of the criminal case, Clune told the Associated Press: "That's something she and prosecutors will have to discuss in the immediate future. The DA's office will have to make that decision on what they want to do."
Security boosted
Athens ordered a major boost in military involvement in security for the Aug. 13-29 Olympic Games, as Greece's public order minister denied reports today of problems with its massive Olympic surveillance system.
An additional 35,000 military personnel have been assigned for "secondary" duties to free the 70,000 police and soldiers already detailed to guard Olympic sites in Athens three other Greek cities.
UNR kicks off two
Two Nevada-Reno players -- junior defensive lineman Brenton Kendrick from Fairfield, Calif., and sophomore cornerback Steven Murphy from Berkeley, Calif. -- were kicked off the team following their weekend arrests on felony drug charges.
Federer stopped
Roger Federer's 23-match winning streak ended in a first-round upset at the Masters Cincinnati tournament. He lost a second-set tiebreaker to former doubles partner Dominik Hrbaty and couldn't rally, falling 1-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4.
Mets' Murphy dies
Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Murphy, who covered the New York Mets from the team's inception in 1962 until his retirement after last season, died at a medical facility in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 79.
