Prosecutors granted more time in teacher case

Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004 | 10:59 a.m.

Prosecutors this morning were granted a five-day extension to prepare their case against a 28-year-old Chaparral High School English teacher facing two counts of sexual misconduct involving a 17-year-old student.

Kenneth Bruce Stacy's attorney, Robert Draskovich, objected to the prosecution's request saying his client, who was arrested on July 30, is entitled to have a hearing within 72 hours of his arrest.

"If the police weren't ready they shouldn't have arrested him," Draskovich said. "This hearing should have been held on Monday, Tuesday at the latest."

Las Vegas Justice of the Peace M. Nelson Segel acknowledged Draskovich's objection, but said the request for the five-day extension was reasonable.

Stacy's hearing was rescheduled for Aug. 10. He remained jailed at the Clark County Detention Center. His bail was set at $30,000.

Stacy is accused of having sex with the girl on July 25 at his home, according to the arrest report.

School district police arrested Stacy on Friday at Chaparral High School, 3850 Annie Oakley Drive, near Sandhill and Viking roads, where he was teaching summer school. Stacy has worked with the Clark County School District for a little more than two years, district officials said.
