Red Rock Canyon sponsoring photo contest
Friends of Red Rock Canyon, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management and Red Rock Canyon Interpretive Association, is sponsoring the third annual Photo Contest. The theme this year will be "Nature and Wildlife of the Mojave Desert, Scenery, and Cultural Resources of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area."
Entries will be accepted at Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. only on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12.
The five categories include: Children, ages 3 to 12 (color); High School, ages 13 to 18 (color); General -- this category must be color Nature/Wildlife digital or prints with the truth of the photo statement maintained; Creative, allows for any alteration of normal color photograph procedures; Black and White, all Nature/Wildlife digital or film prints will be judged equally (no age restrictions).
A nonrefundable fee of $5 per entry for adults and high school students and $3 per entry for children will only be accepted with submission of prints during the designated entry for adults and high school students and $3 per entry for children will only be accepted with submission of prints during the designated entry time frame. There is a maximum of three entries per person.
All photo prints must be a minimum size of 8" by 10" matted with plain glass and a frame size of 11" by 14" or 12" by 16" maximum. No loose photos will be accepted.
Human elements, if present, should be unobtrusive or enhance the nature story. (All people if present in photos should be in hiking attire only and unidentifiable).
All photo entries will be on display at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse for one month from Sept. 14 through Oct. 14.

Registration set for 'Edge' school program
Clark County Parks and Community Services will conduct a series of registrations for parents and guardians of teens wishing to participant in "The Edge" middle school program. "The Edge" is an after school program geared to working parents of middle school teens. Teens will have the opportunity to participate in community building, cultural and recreation activities, homework time, life skill workshops, a variety of sports clubs and much more.
The following are the four middle schools presently participating in "The Edge" after school program:
Silvestri Junior High School, 1055 Silverado Ranch Blvd.; Lawrence Junior High School, 4410 S. Juliano St.; Cortney Junior High School, 5301 E. Hacienda Ave.; Saville Middle School, 8101 N. Torrey Pines Drive.
All participants must be registered and paid before attending the program.
Cost is $34 week; $8 a day.
Payment can be made from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Back To School fair located at Community College of Southern Nevada, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. in the main lobby.
