So you want to wish Las Vegas a happy 100th birthday with your own event?
Then the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration Committee wants you -- and will help pay for your nonprofit group's 2005 bash with grants up to $10,000.
"The message is this is not just a committee's birthday celebration, it is your birthday, too," Stacy Allsbrook, executive director of the committee, said. "Members of the community need to celebrate in a way that is best for them. Each group needs to take ownership in the centennial."
The Las Vegas Centennial will run throughout next year, with an official observance on the city's 100th birthday, May 15, 2005. Scheduled events include the resurrection of the Helldorado Days rodeo and creation of a centennial time capsule.
The educational and event grants, ranging from $500 to $10,000, are available to nonprofit civic, charitable, educational, ethnic and faith-based groups.
The deadline to apply is May 15.
"Applicants need to hit the minimum bar with how their event relates to Las Vegas history and its diverse culture," Allsbrook said, noting applications will be reviewed by a grant committee and then the full centennial board.
To date, more than a dozen applications have been received. Grants will be funded through private sponsorships or from $500,000 the city has raised via the sale of Las Vegas Centennial license plates.
Grant applications are available on the Las Vegas Centennial Celebration Web site, lasvegas2005.org, and at the centennial office, 400 E. Stewart Ave., second floor.
