Festivities
To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is holding the following events at libraries throughout the valley:
3 p.m. Saturday -- The art of Mehndi (henna adornment) at Las Vegas Library, 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North.
6:30 p.m. Thursday -- Local resident and feng shui master Lin Huang will give tips at the Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway.
Origami workshop -- Presented at the following times and locations:
4 p.m. Tuesday -- Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd.
4 p.m. Thursday -- West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
"Rock, Paper, Scissors," a Korean folk tale -- Presented at the following times and locations:
11 a.m. Saturday -- Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road.
2 p.m. Saturday -- Spring Valley Library, 4280 S. Jones Blvd.
4 p.m. Wednesday -- Sunrise Library, 5400 Harris Ave.
6:30 p.m. Wednesday -- West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd.
Israel festival
The Bellagio hotel will host a daylong festival honoring Israel Independence Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free and the event is open to the community. More than 100 vendor and organizational booths will be featured. 732-0556.
Movies
The 1942 movie, "Mildred Pierce," will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive, as part of Clark County Parks and Recreation Services' "Wonder Women" film series. The first screening will be close-captioned for the hearing impaired. Admission is $3. 455-7340.
Dog show
The second annual Animal Foundation's "Best in Show" dog show fund-raiser and adoption event will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Orleans Arena. Tickets are $5 general admission, $20 VIP. 284-7777.
Movie
The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services presents the movie "In the Name of the Father" at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. Tickets are $3. 229-6383.
Book signing
Author Dr. Penelope Tzougros will sign copies of her book, "Wealthy Choices," at 7 p.m. today at Borders Books, 2190 N. Rainbow Blvd. Admission is free. 638-7866.
Film festival
UNLV's Short Film Archive will host a screening of award-winning films at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in UNLV's Architecture Building. Admission is free. 895-3547.
Student film
The student film, "Dwelling," will be shown at 6:30 p.m. today at UNLV's CBC building, room A-106. Admission is free. For more information, go online at www.truecaliber.com.
Acting classes
Clark County Parks & Community Services is offering free acting classes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday at Whitney Center, 5712 E. Missouri Ave. Pre-registration is requested. 455-7576.

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District offers the following book discussion groups at area libraries this week:
