Muslim Family Values Day set

Gov. Kenny Guinn has declared today Muslim Family Values Day, and the Islamic Society of Nevada will celebrate at 7:30 p.m. at Jamia Masjid, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road.

Speakers include Shahid Azmat, Brother Tariq, Dr. Bashir Choudhrey, Sheriff Bill Young, Aslam Abdullah, Khalid Khan, the FBI and other officials.

Open house set for Spring Valley

Clary County planners will hold a Spring Valley Draft Master Plan open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in Durango High School's cafeteria, 7100 Dewey Drive.

Latin concert, festival planned

Univision Radio stations KISF 103.5-FM, KQMR 99.3-FM and KLSQ 870-AM are sponsoring the eighth annual concert/festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lorenzi Park, Washington Avenue between Valley View Boulevard and Rancho Drive.

The food and music festival will feature artists German Lizarrago, K-Paz de la Sierra, Banda Maguey, Adolfo Urias, Voces del Rancho as well as Latin Grammy Award winner AMOR artist David Bisbal.

A separate children's area and stage will host local acts such as Show Biz Kids, Razzmatazz, plus a special performance from Balet Folklorico Tepuchcalli and Mariachi Mi Tierra.

Educational programs, face painters, arts and crafts, bounce houses, remote control miniature auto racing, balloonists, children's characters, clowns and much more events are scheduled.

Silverado to host benefit golf event

Silverado High School will present the Leadership Lights Golf Tournament beginning with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the new Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Road, North Las Vegas.

The tournament is a fund-raiser event to help Silverado High raise $200,000 to host the National Association of Student Councils 68th annual conference in June.

The tournament fee is $150 and includes: green/cart fees, unlimited use of the practice facility before play, four-hole contests, and a barbecue dinner following the tournament play. Awards will be given to recognize tournament and contest winners following the dinner, at which time a raffle will be held. Prizes such as golf bags, dinners, driving range passes, show tickets, and other items will be raffled off.

Bowling to help City of Hope

The Las Vegas Sun City Chapter for City of Hope is sponsoring its annual Bowl-a-Rama from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Suncoast Bowling Center, 9090 Alta Drive, to benefit research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope.

The Bowl-A-Rama features three games of 9-pin no tap bowling.

Donations are $20, which includes bowling shoes, ball and a Suncoast Sunday brunch.

The event is open to the public and participants can form their own team (four to five people per team). No children under 15.

The second annual Street Smarts for Kids

will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at all 14 United Studio of Self Defense locations. The purpose of the event is to help teach children and their parents about child abduction, protection and safety.
