Strip hotel guests evacuated as coffee pot gets too hot

Wednesday, April 28, 2004 | 9:20 a.m.

A Tuesday coffee-pot fire on the 26th floor of Bally's caused less than $500 in damage, but inconvenienced midday guests when firefighters evacuated three floors of the Strip hotel.

A Sterno-style coffee-pot warmer caused the fire, which started about 10:45 a.m. in a meeting room and prompted the evacuation of hotel guests on the 25th, 26th and 27th floors, said Bob Leinbach, spokesman for the Clark County Fire Department.

Guests were allowed to return to their rooms in less than two hours, he said.

Hotel employees were able to put out the fire with on-scene portable fire extinguishers before emergency personnel arrived, Leinbach said. No injuries were reported.

Paramedics had already been called to the scene after an unrelated report of a hotel guest suffering chest pains, he said.

A high-tech ventilation system helped smoke from the fire disperse relatively quickly, Leinbach said.

Damage to the meeting room is estimated at "less than $500," Leinbach said.

"It might have scorched the wall, but that's all," he said.
