NLV police, fire communicate

North Las Vegas police and fire departments are getting new radios that will make it easier for them to talk to each other, and most other emergency agencies, thanks to a $1.2 million federal grant.

Fire Chief Jim Stubler said his firefighters can easily reach other area fire departments with his department's current radios. However, they cannot easily reach police officers because their radios are different brands and not compatible.

The new radios will link the two departments regardless of what brand of radio is used, he said.

Stubler said his department could be using the new radios in August. The Fire Department is expected to get 25 new radios, and the Police Department 344 new radios.

Man in standoff pleads not guilty

A Henderson man who held police at bay in a 24-hour standoff at his girlfriend's home two weeks ago pleaded not guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm in U.S. District Court Wednesday.

A federal trial date of June 29 was set for Jeffrey Donnelly, 38, who is also facing charges in Clark County District Court.

State prosecutors charged Donnelly with attempted murder of a police officer, coercion, false imprisonment, resisting/obstructing a public officer and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

North Las Vegas changes water use

Following the lead of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the North Las Vegas City Council on Wednesday approved changes to water-use rules for car washing and misting systems.

The changes, which mirror those already approved by the water authority, allow homeowners to wash their cars once a week so long as they use a nozzle that shuts off when it isn't being used.

The council voted 5-0 to approve the changes.
