Letter: Gifted education fuels economy
Wednesday, April 21, 2004 | 8:48 a.m.
For too long, Americans have withheld financial support from gifted education, believing, apparently, that, "Those kids are smart, they can take care of themselves." Well, now it's us they need to take care of. The American people need a new, stronger economy built on innovative, well-paid jobs.
Policy-makers in Washington tell us that outsourcing is here to stay, and that the way to offset it is with innovation and creativity. In short, we need more students such as Bill Gates. And the Bill Gates types are developed in classes for the gifted (if they develop at all).
It's time for parents and teachers to contact their elected representatives and ask them to follow the Nevada Democrats' lead. Politicians who vote to expand gifted education will be voting to offset the outsourcing of American jobs. And that's a very good thing.
