City of Lights Jazz Festival set

The 11th annual Las Vegas City of Lights Jazz Festival will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday at Desert Breeze Park, Spring Mountain Road and Durango Drive.

The festival lineup includes 11 scheduled artists: Rick Braun, Kirk Whalum, Norman Brown, Brian Culbertson, Mindi Abair, Michael Lington, Michael Manson, Bobby Lyle, Marcus Johnson, Nick Colionne and Lao Tizer Band.

Partial proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Clark County Parks and Community Services Scholarship Fund.

VIP tickets are $97.50, which include reserved seating, a private cash bar and executive toilets; $54.55; $15 for children between 11 to 18; and free for children ages 10 and under.

Seminar features sex after 50

The Las Vegas Valley chapter of Senior Friends will host Sex After 50, a seminar at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at its Green Valley office, 2809 N. Green Valley Parkway.

The free event takes a look at ways sex and intimacy can improve quality of life.

University of Nevada, Las Vegas professor Jean Henry will lead the program and discuss ways to ensure that intimacy, sex and one's own sexuality continue to play a central role in relationships and life.

Participants will also be entered in a drawing for a special romance package that includes dinner and show tickets for two.

Relay for Life fund-raiser on tap

The American Cancer Society will hold its Relay for Life fund-raiser from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Green Valley High School, 460 Arroyo Grande, Henderson.

Relay for Life is the organization's national signature event. Teams of 10 to 15 men, women and children from area businesses, organizations, schools, hospitals and neighborhoods are invited to help raise money to support the fight against cancer.

Battery recycling program offered

Millions of car and boat batteries go unrecycled, leaking dangerous materials into the environment. To help combat the hazard, American Automobile Association is organizing a free battery recycling program now through Saturday, by offering the following drop-off locations:

Now through Friday: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., American Auto Care, 10177, W. Charleston Blvd., 259-2600.

Now through Saturday: 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Auto Guardian, 3550 E. Post Road, Suite 700, 259-2600.

Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunset Park, 2601 Sunset Road.

Tips for handling your battery are: Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from any leaking lead and acid; always keep the battery upright; transport it in a cardboard box or plastic container; if battery is cracked, transport it in a leak-proof container.

Children's Day celebration planned

The sixth annual International Children's Day Family Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 Grand Central Parkway.

The multicultural celebration of the traditional El Dia de los Ninos brings parents and children together for a day of fun, food, and activities such as face painting, crafts, games cultural enrichment, educational exhibits, mascots and more. Youth music and dance performances are also scheduled.

The event is free to the public.

Fashion show looks for teen models

Nevada Ballet Theatre along with Nordstrom will host the 2004 annual teen fashion show and breakfast at 9 a.m. Sunday in the Great Hall on the runway at the Fashion Show mall.

Teens, both male and female, between the ages of 13 to 18 are being sought to participate as models in the event at which model scouts and recruiters are expected to attend.

No experience is necessary. Fashion advisors will provide modeling tips and instruction. Nordstrom will provide the fashions from its junior department, Brass Plum. Participants will be required to purchase two tickets to the breakfast and fashion show ($85 each), as a fund-raiser for Nevada Ballet Theatre.

Sun City Summerlin's

15th annual Spring Garage Sale will be held from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Pinnacle Community Center, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd. There will be more than 150 vendors, and food will be offered for sale. Parking is free.

New Vista Community,

3085 S. Valley View Blvd., will hold its Aluminum Can Recycling event Thursday at the charity's emporium, to bridge the gap between the developmentally disabled community and local Las Vegans. Snacks and drinks will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donations of cans will be accepted at the emporium and at 7875 N. Rainbow Blvd.

The Las Vegas Astronomical Society

will be out for the day on Saturday to talk about and share information on astronomy. There will be a slide presentation on a variety of subjects during the day. Telescopes will be set up to view the sun from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The group will share telescopes and a slide presentation for the evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bring binoculars, telescope, chairs, snacks, and the family.
