CARSON CITY -- An inmate serving a life term without the possibility of parole for murder from Clark County was stabbed to death Monday at the state prison in Ely, prison officials said.
Carl Green, 37, was stabbed in the neck by another inmate in his housing unit about 1:30 p.m. and died at the William R. Riree Hospital in Ely while undergoing surgery a few hours later, officials said.
Glen Whorton, assistant director, said investigators were able to interview Green before his surgery and a suspect has been identified.
But Whorton said the investigation into the specifics and the motive for the attack remain under investigation. The case has been turned over to the White Pine County Sheriff's Office.
Green's incarceration at the prison began in September 1991 after his first-degree murder conviction for the December 1989 stabbing of 19-year-old LaDonna Jones at her North Las Vegas home, according to prison records.
