Editorial: Let the voters decide

Tuesday, April 20, 2004 | 9:13 a.m.

At their state convention over the weekend, Nevada Democrats adopted a platform that included many sensible positions. They fortified their opposition to Yucca Mountain by saying no to any negotiation with the federal government. Consistent with Democratic thought, they also affirmed support for the U.S. Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion, objected to the proposed federal Marriage Amendment, called for the guarantee of equal rights for same-gender couples, and supported an increase in the minimum wage.

All in all, the platform was what you would expect to emerge from a Democratic convention. There was one glaring exception, however -- a plank calling for the impeachment of President Bush. Such talk is ridiculous. Just as we opposed the impeachment of President Clinton, and the divisiveness and distraction it caused, we oppose any thought of impeaching President Bush. Impeachment is a grave matter for the House of Representatives to initiate after charges have been made and facts have been carefully weighed. It's not something that should gain its momentum from partisan politics. The presidential election is less than seven months away. If there should be a change at the White House, let the voters decide.
