51s' losing streak reaches five games

Clint Nageotte retired 14 consecutive batters and Pat Borders hit a fourth inning home run to lead the Tacoma Rainiers to a 2-1 victory against the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field Wednesday night.

Nageotte (2-0) struck out five and limited the 51s to one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. The defeat marked the fifth consecutive loss for Las Vegas (2-5).

The home run by Borders opened the scoring and Jamal Strong added a run-scoring single to close out the fourth for the Rainiers (4-3).

Las Vegas scored its lone run in the sixth when Rick Bells groundout scored Antonio Perez.

Lobos land recruit

Tony Dandridge, a 6-foot-5 forward who averaged more than 29 points per game at Cahon High School in San Bernardino, Calif., has signed a letter of intent with New Mexico.

Serena skips Fed Cup

Serena Williams withdrew from the U.S. team's first-round Fed Cup match at Slovenia because she is concerned about her knee. She will be replaced by Laura Granville for the April 24-25 matches.

Costa Rica beats Fire

Costa Rica's Saprissa got goals from Andres Nunez and Alonso Solis in a 2-0 victory against the Chicago Fire in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinals.

Kanaan the fastest

Brazilian Tony Kanaan drove the fastest lap today on the first day of practice for the Indy Japan 300 at Motegi.
