Rate hearing concludes

Thursday, April 15, 2004 | 10:56 a.m.

A hearing before the state Public Utilities Commission into Southwest Gas Corp.'s request to raise rates by 16.7 percent lasted just two hours on Wednesday.

A decision on the case is expected from the PUC by May, and the Las Vegas company has asked for permission to make the rate adjustment -- if approved -- on June 1. The company made the $45.6 million request in an effort to meet rising prices for natural gas.

If approved the average customer's winter bill would jump from $49.34 to $58.22.
