Driver dies after car hits wall

A Las Vegas man was killed about 12:20 a.m. Sunday when the car he was driving crossed the 2600 block of North Walnut Road and crashed into a block wall, Metro Police said.

Alejandro Miranda-Guiterrez, 23, was driving the car and not wearing a seat belt when the car crashed, police said. He was partially ejected from the vehicle, police said.

Officers said that evidence at the scene indicated the 1989 Cadillac Seville was moving at a high rate of speed.

The driver was taken to University Medical Center where he died of his injuries.

27 protesters cited at Test Site

Nye County sheriff's deputies cited 27 demonstrators for trespassing at the Nevada Test Site over the weekend as more than 50 people protested nuclear weapons.

Paul Colbert of the Nevada Desert Experience, the organizer of the 65-mile march and demonstration at the Test Site over Easter weekend, said up to 80 people participated in prayers and vigils Friday through Sunday.

Those who crossed a cattle guard at the entrance to the Test Site were cited for trespassing and released.

Man rescued from mine shaft

Clark County heavy rescue team members and Metro Police's Search and Rescue Squad rescued a 29-year-old man from a mine shaft Sunday afternoon.

It took almost three hours for the rescue team, which trains at least once a year and had practiced a similar rescue from a 30-foot construction trench nearby last week, to bring the injured man out of the mine shaft off Blue Diamond Road and Rainbow Boulevard.

The man was conscious as he was rescued from one of some 8,000 abandoned mine shafts in Clark County. He complained of back and arm injuries, rescuers said.
