Letter: Wealthy must make sacrifices
Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 | 9:01 a.m.
President Bush says he needs another $87 billion to fight terrorism in Iraq. This is on top of the $79 billion Congress gave him last April. In his recent speech to the American people, he said, "This will take time and require sacrifice. Yet we will do what is necessary, we will spend what is necessary to achieve this essential victory in the war on terror, to promote freedom and to make our own nation more secure."
Although the justification for Bush's preemptive strike against Iraq remains ambiguous, we must finish the job we started -- whatever the cost. We must all pay the price associated with this commitment. Middle-class America is feeling the brunt of this administration's dysfunctional economic policy while the wealthy are enjoying the latest Bush tax cut and riding around in gas-guzzling SUVs.
Something has to give! To pay for the "war on terrorism," the massive tax cuts to the wealthy and corporate America must be curtailed. If sacrifices must be made, all Americans must bear the burden. The elite need to pony up their share, too.
