Business filings strong

CARSON CITY -- There was a double-digit increase this summer in the number of companies that have filed to do business in Nevada, the Secretary of State's Office reported.
Secretary of State Dean Heller said business filings rose by 12 percent in June, 14 percent in July and 13 percent in August compared to the same time of a year ago. A spokesman said some of the firms may have been trying to beat the increase in filing fees that become effective in November. Heller said 35,823 new businesses filed organizational documents this year as of Aug. 31, bringing the total to 216,337 on file as of Aug. 31. That comparies with 198,209 at the same time in 2003.
"The business friendly fees and regulations in Nevada have allowed the state to tread water while many states reported significant decreases in the number of new business filings over the last few years," Heller said.
He said he hopes this will be a continuing trend. He said his commercial recording division generated nearly $41 million in revenue last fiscal year.
