CARSON CITY -- Gov. Kenny Guinn says the state's economy appears to be picking up, judging from the latest unemployment figures.
The unemployment rate for August dipped two-tenths of a percentage point to 5.2 percent, compared to July.
And total employment grew by 21,900 jobs from the same month of a year ago, the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today.
Guinn said, "The rate of job growth has improved in each of the last three months since stalling during the Iraq war. Tourism is improving, and population growth is creating demand for stores, health care facilities and other services."
The department said the 5.2 percent jobless rate was lower than the nation's 6.1 percent and California's 6.6 percent.
There were an estimated 55,700 people out of work statewide, compared with 60,900 in July. Total employment reached 1,079,200 up 2.1 percent from a year ago.
