Cultural festival
The Pacific Islands Festival -- Ho'olaule'a 2003 -- comes to Lorenzei Park from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Activities include live entertainment, crafts, demonstrations, boutiques, games, traditional dances and foods. Admission is free. 229-6383.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District is presenting bilingual storyteller Joe Hayes at the following locations this week:

Balloon festival
Thirty hot air balloons will take to the skies as part of the 2003 Las Vegas Hot Air Balloon Festival today, Saturday and Sunday at Rhodes Ranch, located on South Durango Road, two miles south of Interstate 215. Admission is free. 247-6905.
Presentation
The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District presents "You Can't Read That: An Evening With Banned Books" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Admission is free. 734-7323.
Poets' corner
Keith Brantley and Pendelita Toney will host a poets' corner at 7:30 p.m. today at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The series features established poets and open-mike participants. Admission is free. 229-4800.
Movie series
The Clark County Parks and Community Services Department presents "The Starlight Movie Series" today at Paradise Park at Tropicana and McLeod. The free movie begins at 8:30 p.m. Bring picnic baskets, blankets and lawn chairs, but no alcohol or pets. 455-8278.

Acting workshops
The New City Theatre, 2900 Patrick Lane, is offering free acting workshops for those over the age of 18 from 1-3 p.m. every Saturday. 547-1228.
Drama workshop
A free community drama workshop will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesdays in the main showroom of the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, 4000 W. Flamingo Road. 457-0234.
Art contest
Entries are being accepted for a competition sponsored by the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society to complement the museum's "Neon Unplugged: Signs from the Boneyard" exhibit. The deadline is Oct. 1. Pieces entered in the contest will be displayed from Nov. 1 through Jan. 18, and the winner will receive $250. 486-5205, ext. 227.
Sculpture contest
Entries are being accepted for a sculpture contest held by the Pulidor Foundation/Spirit of the Nations, in preparation for its second annual Native American Arts & International Film Festival from Nov. 14-16.
