Gang felon arrested in Williamses' sister killing

A felon with ties to a street gang was charged with murder in the death of the sister of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams.

Aaron Michael Hammer appeared briefly in Superior Court but Judge John J. Cheroske postponed his arraignment to Sept. 23 at the request of the defense. He remained held without bail.

Hammer, 24, of Compton, is accused in the shooting of Yetunde Price, 31, as she sat in a sport utility vehicle early Sunday in Compton, Calif., with a companion.

An assault rifle and shell casings were found at the scene.

State panel asks Arum

Nevada boxing officials say they will notify promoter Bob Arum that they want him to appear before the commission to formally lay out his charges of misconduct in the scoring Saturday of the Oscar De La Hoya-Shane Mosley fight. Arum has claimed that there was misconduct by a commission member in helping pick the judges who worked the 154-pound title fight, which Mosley won by unanimous decision.

Judge orders Webber

A federal judge in Detroit deferred for about two years the sentencing of Sacramento Kings star Chris Webber, who admitted lying to a grand jury about his dealings with a former University of Michigan basketball booster. Webber instead received a provision to his bond that requires him to volunteer at a six-week literacy program at a Detroit middle school .

Panthers DB arrested

Carolina Panthers defensive back Jarrod Cooper was arrested during a traffic stop and charged with driving while intoxicated and possession of a controlled substance in Charlotte, N.C. Cooper, who already has a drunken driving conviction on his record stemming from a one-car accident in February 2002, was also charged with speeding and driving with a revoked license, police said.

UNLV wins in Oregon

The 20th-ranked UNLV women's team maintained its 12-stroke lead and shot a final-round 313 to win the Northwest Invite by 12 strokes Tuesday over TCU at Woodlands Golf Course in Sunriver, Ore. UNLV's sophomore All-American, Sunny Oh, finished third in individual standings.

Surgery for Ashby

Andy Ashby will have "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow, officially ending his three-year stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers and perhaps ending his major-league career. Even if he successfully rehabilitates the elbow, Ashby won't pitch again until 2005.

Canadien injured

Montreal Canadiens forward Chad Kilger was hospitalized after sustaining a serious eye injury from an accidental high stick in training camp.

Team doctor David Mulder said there were multiple fractures around Kilger's left eye socket.

Shutout for Howard

American goalkeeper Tim Howard earned a shutout in his Champions League debut as Manchester United scored four first-half goals to beat Panathinaikos 5-0.

Sullivan has cancer

Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan, the offensive coordinator at UAB, was diagnosed with cancer following surgery on his neck.

Atlanta teams sold

AOL Time Warner agreed to sell the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers for $250 million to a group that includes the son-in-law of former owner Ted Turner.
