CARSON CITY -- The court postponement of the California recall election may impact Nevada because seven rural counties in Nevada use punch card voting machines similar to those that were cited in that ruling.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Monday that punch card voting machines are unreliable.
Chief Deputy Secretary of State Renee Parker said today that the court decision may force the state to buy new voting machines for rural Nevada for the 2004 presidential election. But she said she wants to discuss the issue with the state attorney general's office to determine what happens if there is an appeal of the California decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Replacing the voting machines would cost $2 million to $3 million, Parker said.
