Flood district plans policy change

The Clark County Regional Flood Control District will likely institute a policy to inform the members of its board whom to contact in case of a flood, the head of the agency said Thursday.

District General Manager Gale Fraser said some of the board members seemed to have trouble getting in touch with the agency leadership in the days after the Aug. 19 flood. Fraser and an assistant, district spokeswoman Betty Hollister, both left on weeklong vacations after the flood, which caused $4.5 million in damage to northwestern Las Vegas neighborhoods.

Fraser said several deputies were on the job, including Assistant General Manager Kevin Eubanks and Senior Hydrologist Tim Sutco. He added that the agency does not plan to change its vacation policies.

Las Vegas Councilman Michael Mack, a district board member, said he had concerns about the accessibility of agency leadership after the flood.

"We've learned a lot from this flood," he said. Mack added that he believes media inquiries and requests from the region's political leadership were ultimately covered.

"The staff that was here... did a superb job whenever I called upon them," he said. "There are possibly some policy things that we need to look at."
