NASCAR reveals Nextel Cup dates
With network TV starting times the only remaining mystery, NASCAR released its 2004 Nextel Cup and Busch Grand National series schedules Tuesday.
The 36-race Nextel Cup and 34-race Busch Grand National tour mirror the current respective schedules. Nextel will replace R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.'s Winston brand as title sponsor for NASCAR's premier series beginning in January.
NASCAR's blockbuster decision to move the traditional Labor Day weekend race from the Darlington (S.C.) Raceway after a 54-year run to the California Speedway as a second Cup date, on Sunday night, was confirmed in June. The Mountain Dew Southern 500 will be run at Darlington on Nov. 14.
Tuesday's announcement was highlighted by the news that Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., again will play host to the annual all-star race in May.
Jockey suspended
Jeffrey H. Faul, a jockey at Great Lakes Downs in Fruitport Township, Mich., has been suspended after being accused of using an electrical "buzzer" on his horse to win a race. A buzzer is a hand-held, battery-operated device that emits a shock.
Roddick in Davis Cup
U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick will lead an U.S. Davis Cup team that plays at Slovakia in a World Group playoff Sept. 19-21 at Bratislava. He will be joined by Mardy Fish, James Blake, Brian Vahaly and twins Bob and Mike Bryan.
Olympian a winner
Audley Harrison, the 2000 Olympic super heavyweight gold medalist from Britain, knocked out Quinn Navarre 32 seconds into the third round of their scheduled eight-round bout at Miami Beach, Fla.
Women's vet advances
Four-time defending champion Carol Semple Thompson won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur in Austin, Texas.
Bribe investigation
European soccer's governors will investigate allegations that Greek officials tried to bribe Armenian players to fix a Euro 2004 qualifier.
TCU quarterback out
Quarterback Tye Gunn will miss 3-5 weeks for No. 22 TCU after separating his right shoulder in practice.
