Columnist Peter Benton: Group seeks nominees for SNGA Hall of Fame

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

The Southern Nevada Golf Association is seeking nominations for the SNGA's Golf Hall of Fame. Please note that the nominee must have been a resident of Nevada during the period for which his/her accomplishments are being recognized.

The criteria for nominations are as follows:

For all of the above categories, list the positions of employment or offices held within specific organizations during the period for which the nominee's performance is being recognized. Develop a chronological listing starting with the most current time period.

Nominations should include a detailed description of the nominee's achievements or significant contributions to golf in Southern Nevada.

The Southern Nevada Golf Association Hall of Fame originated in 1991 with its Charter being to induct worthy individuals every four years. The original four inductees were Jerry Belt, Clyde Cobb, Stuart Reid and Charlie Teel. In 1997 James Cashman Jr., Ernest Haupt and Pat Walker were added to the list of honorees.

In 2001, those honored were the 1998 UNLV golf team, (Jeremy Anderson, Bill Lunde, Chris Berry, Charlie Hoffman and Scott Lander) who were so ably led by coach Dwaine Knight; Robert Gamez, a former amateur standout here in Nevada and now a successful PGA Tour pro, and Jim Colbert, whose exploits on both the PGA and Champions Tour, along with his work in bringing the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament to our town, has been well documented.

Nominations of worthy individuals must be received no later than Oct. 31. Typed letters would be preferable, but legible hand written ones will be accepted. They must be signed by the originator and forwarded to the SNGA's executive director, Larry McGovern, Golf House, 3590 East Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, Nev., 89120.
