Massive construction site fire breaks out, damage in the millions

The four-alarm fire broke about 8:30 p.m. in southeast Las Vegas and quickly spread throughout the sprawling construction site, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air.

"It's one of the largest structure fires I've ever seen," Clark County fire spokesman Bob Leinbach said.

Leinbach said about 100 firefighters battled the inferno for more than two hours before they could bring it under control. The fire could be seen for miles, and forced authorities to shut down area roads and a portion of the Las Vegas Beltway.

Firefighters managed to save several buildings on the site and prevented the blaze from destroying nearby homes, Leinbach said.

Damage "has got to be in the millions," the spokesman said. "This will look a lot a worse in the day."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
