Girl, 16, killed in three-car collision

A 16-year-old Las Vegas girl was killed and six others were injured, one critically, in a three-car collision early today western Las Vegas, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The girl, a front-seat passenger in a Chevrolet Impala SS driven by an 18-year-old Las Vegas man, was dead at the scene at the Las Vegas Beltway and Town Center Drive, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Highway Patrol officials said it appeared the driver ran a red light.

No citations were immediately issued in the accident that occurred shortly after midnight, spokesman Trooper Loy Hixson said, noting that at the conclusion of the investigation charges may be leveled.

The name of the Chevy driver was not immediately released. The name of the dead teenage passenger was not released pending notification of relatives.

A man who was the right rear passenger in the Chevrolet was in critical condition this morning at University Medical Center, Hixson said. His age and town of residence were not immediately available.

The incident occurred when the Chevy traveling eastbound through the intersection was struck on its right side by a Land Rover Discovery traveling northbound on the beltway, Hixson said.

The two cars then spun, with the rear of the Chevrolet striking a westbound Dodge Dakota that was stopped at a traffic light, Hixson said.

There was one driver in the Land Rover, a driver and passenger in the Dodge and a left rear seat passenger in the Chevy, all of whom suffered what NHP investigators termed minor injuries. All were taken to UMC for treatment. None of their names was released.

All of the people involved in the accident, except for the driver of the Chevrolet, were believed to have been wearing seatbelts, Hixson said.

It has not yet been determined if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors in the accident, Hixson said.
