Colombian official visits Las Vegas Valley

The Colombian consulate for the Western region is visiting the Las Vegas Valley for the first time in four years, the Colombian Association of Las Vegas announced.

Tania Covina, vice consul based in San Francisco, will be at the Oiga, Mire, Vea restaurant near Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard today until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5. p.m.

The official will handle passports, national identification cards, medical records and other documents for the valley's growing Colombian population.

The visit comes in part due to the association's unusual attempt to conduct a census of Colombians living in the region, which took place in August. More than 1,000 people filled out the census and the association estimates the total community to be at least twice as large, said Alvaro Rueda, a board member.

Perhaps more importantly, 95 percent of those who responded to the census said they needed consular services.

"We've been trying to get these services for four years and we finally got some results," Rueda said.
