Dentists will trade for Halloween candy
Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003 | 8:44 a.m.
Local pediatric dentists Drs. Bill Waggoner and Jon Galea are offering to trade children's Halloween Candy for other treats, such as toys, lower sugar foods and cash.
The dentists, partners in Pediatric Dental Care Associates of Las Vegas, 8981 W. Sahara Ave., plan to donate the collected candy to troops in Iraq as a gift from area children. They will encourage children to write notes and send pictures to accompany the sweets.
"We're not trying to take the fun out of the holiday, but rather want to promote a more balanced behavior," said Waggoner. "Even though many of the younger children will have another chance when their adult teeth come in, starting good eating and dental care habits now will ensure a lifetime of good nutrition."
He added that the troops would enjoy hearing from Las Vegas' children.
"Our troops need to hear our sincere thanks right now," he said. "I'm hoping a picture, poem or letter from a child with their candy gift will give a glimpse of home and show sincere appreciation."
Candy will be accepted at the practice 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 3-5. Children will be offered a choice of a fast food meal, stuffed toy or cash at $1 per pound of exchanged candy. For more information, call the dental office at 254-4220.
