Former lightweight champion Paul Spadafora was in jail today on charges he shot and critically injured a woman.

Spadafora shot Nadine Russo, 20, in the chest in or near his car early Sunday at a gas station in McKees Rocks, outside Pittsburgh, police said.

Spadafora, 28, being held at Allegheny County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Spadafora was questioned by McKees Rocks police Sunday just after the shooting but released because there was not enough evidence to press charges.

A warrant was later issued for Spadafora's arrest but police were unable to find him for about eight hours. He was arrested Sunday night following a traffic stop near his home.

Russo had surgery today and remained in critical condition.

Singh in money lead

Vijay Singh quickly broke out of a four-way tie and never let anyone get within two shots of him on the back nine at the Funai Classic at Disney at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. He won $720,000, which left him poised to end Tiger Woods' four-year reign of the PGA Tour money title.

UNLV women prevail

Junior midfielder Annii Magliulo's goal midway through the second overtime lifted UNLV to its first Mountain West Conference victory, 1-0, against Air Force at Colorado Springs. UNLV is 7-9-2, 1-4.

Reds hire new GM

The Cincinnati Reds today hired Dan O'Brien as their general manager. He was an assistant GM with the Texas Rangers.

No. 2 seed wins ITA

New Mexico's Divan Coetzee, the No. 2 seed, defeated eighth-seeded Matias Silva of Boise State, 6-4, 6-4, to win the ITA Mountain Region Championships singles title at UNLV.

Joseph rejoins Wings

Goaltender Curtis Joseph was recalled by the Detroit Red Wings. Recovering from surgery to remove bone chips from his right ankle, Joseph made one rehab start for Grand Rapids of the AHL.
