Letter: Ignorance and drug use infect college campuses
Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 | 8:52 a.m.
The disruption of the distribution of the UNLV student paper is just one incident of bigotry sweeping college campuses today. Students don't offer rebuttal to publications or speakers with whom they disagree, they just destroy and disrupt them.
Since so many students require remedial subjects upon entering college and have not been taught anything but political correctness, it is not surprising that they have not encountered the concept of, "I may not agree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it," which is the basis of freedom of speech.
College is supposed to open students' minds to new ideas, but what can you expect when the main student activities seem to be spring break and pickling their brains with drugs and alcohol on weekends.
College administrators don't like to talk about this but there is an epidemic of alcohol and drug use on American campuses. Ignorance, feelings of inferiority and addled brains account for the students' inability to handle new and different ideas in a constructive and intelligent manner.
