Ousmane Barro, a well-traveled basketball prospect from Chicago Julian High, lands in Las Vegas on Thursday night to make an official visit to UNLV this weekend.
An athletic 6-foot-10 center, Barro splashed onto the national scene two summers ago with his performance at the Nike Camp in Princeton, N.J.
He was ineligible to play at Julian as a junior and senior, and his sketchy academic history kept him from playing at a junior college in Kansas last season. Barro made an unofficial visit to UNLV last year.
UNLV senior forward James Peters made the all-state team in Illinois his senior season at Julian.
The Rebels have one more scholarship available for their next recruiting class. Coach Charlie Spoonhour and his staff regard Barton County (Kan.) Community College forward J.P. Batista highly, but it has not been determined when Batista will schedule an official visit.
Major event at UNLV
More than 100 college teams will compete in the 2003 Mountain Region Championships beginning Wednesday at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex. Both singles finalists and the championship doubles team will advance to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships next month in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Rebels finish ninth
The UNLV women shot a final-round 305 and slipped from sixth to ninth place in the Mercedes Benz Women's Championships at Knoxville, Tenn. Ohio State beat Oklahoma State by one stroke to win the team title. Junior Hwanhee Lee finished in tie for 26th place to lead the Rebels.
May suspended
Vancouver Canucks forward Brad May was suspended for one game without pay today by the NHL for cross-checking Sabres defenseman Jay McKee.
Olympic champ hurt
Olympic champion Kjetil Andre Aamodt broke his right ankle when he fell today in Soelden, Austria, while training and could be out until January.
